“If you want to fly, give up everything that weighs you down.” It can be hard to overlook certain aspects of the past, especially for someone who has been through a lot. To move forward requires discipline and resilience.
Our expert stylist Dean is a big believer in leaving behind your troubles to reach for the stars and achieve your dreams. He says, “don’t hold onto the moment. Let it go and move on.” - and that’s just he did! Always hungry for the next challenge Dean took the plunge and moved from Dublin to London to immerse himself in a fashion-filled fast-paced environment. Dean now resides in Dalston and loves the laid back, chilled out vibes of East London. We sat down with Dean to find out more about his free spirit and passion for change. So who really is Dean? Let’s find out!
I moved to London around 6 years ago - I was desperate to change things up and surround myself with open-minded people, fashion and opportunity. Thankfully, I got everything I wanted!
Well after moving to London I worked in many hair competitions and on projects like London Fashion Week. I also landed myself a huge photography opportunity with the makeup brand Shu Uemura where I collaborated with the photographer legend Solve Sundsbo, working on their international campaigns. This experience was a dream come true for me, it was exactly why I challenged myself to move to London. This is something I've always been interested to do in my career, pushing the boundaries with looks and creating beautiful hair at such a high standard. There's no better feeling than taking a step back and being proud of the work you have done. It’s why I love my job.
I’m passionate about working with people - my line of work has allowed me to meet with a wide range of people, from clients on a daily basis and teaching both stylist and clients new skills. Being able to observe people and listen to what's needed for them to be able to grow both as a person and with new skills to make their life easier. I see my work in The Chapel as more than just the aesthetic. I’m really interested in the energy underneath the surface that makes people feel good about themselves.
I love working with the energy of the human body - even my own. I practice yoga at the Buddhist Centre in Bethnal Green every week. I am also a Reiki healer and have been working with Reiki for the last 3 years. This allows me to balance people’s energy and in doing this I have helped individuals in recovery and those with anxiety and depression.
Helping people have that deep state of relaxation that we all need, especially in the world we live in at the minute with such high pressured jobs and everyday life in general. This led me down the road to completing a counselling course with Talk for Health, allowing me to work on a deeper level clearing the mind and offloading unnecessary baggage from both the body and the mind. Bringing balance to the mind, body and spirit.
Having that time for a conversation and listening to people is key for me allowing me to fully understand what my guest’s needs are and to make sure they are met. The Chapel gives me time to understand what people are feelings and lets me work out whether a certain cut or style is what they really want at this point in time. Before any drastic changes, I like to ensure a guest’s emotions are in check and be really honest with them about what is achievable and making sure its the right moment for that change, bringing out what is beautiful about them.
Learning about my guest’s personality; are they quirky, arty? What is their edge? Charging by time allows me to bring out what type of person they really are. Talking about what they like and don't like and making sure were both on the same page before starting any treatments. So that they can be as comfortable as possible and completely relaxed. The Chapel gives guests an experience that is relaxing from the offset, and that for me is so important.
My message “if you want to fly, give everything up that weighs you down” is something I wholeheartedly believe in. Everyone has their story and sometimes holding onto things stops us from growing as a person. I for one see every life lesson like a stepping stone to grow. It helps to build you as a person and makes you a stronger person. I also live by the quote ‘you only live once’. In every situation, live it like it’s your last day and reflect happiness onto others!
