We Love Grace Coddington!!!
Who is she some of you might be asking, well does The September Issue film ring any bells?
The film was a kind of documentary that followed Anna Wintour, the American Editor of Vogue Magazine, during the lead up to the release of the September issue of the magazine. She is known as The Ice Queen and she certainly lives up to this title. I kind of have a respect for Wintour, as she knows how to get people to listen to her and is not scared of letting people know what she really thinks, oh how I would love to go around in meetings with my arms continually crossed wearing huge shades, with a stone cold expression staring out to the quivering designers or her assistants presenting their ideas to her. They just want to be loved by Anna, and even her daughter didnt escape the scowl, when talking on how she wanted to be a lawyer. Wintour looked across to her and nonchalantly uttered, “We’ll see” .
But although Anna is a respected Editor, I have to totally admire Grace, who is described as the artistic one of the duo. She started out as a rebel model in the 1950s-60s, and did loads of covers for Vogue. She went on to work with David Bailey and was a huge success, but was involved in an accident and found herself becoming a journalist and directing shoots. She’s a fascinating character and seems charming with it. She directs all the shoots for the magazine, and is truly, undeniably talented. Her work is dreamy and beautiful and her sense of humour and quirkiness resonates in her photographs.
Grace is my new heroine. She is understated in the way she works, (she cleverly knows how to work the robotics of the Wintour) and her team appear to genuinely love her. She’s inspiring and passionate in her work. She is genuine. She is classy. And she is funny. What a combination.
The September Issue is available on DVD now.
