How to do a curly blowdry

Whether you have straight, wavy or curly hair, everyone loves big, bouncy curls. If you want to get simple but beautiful salon-like curls at home, just by blowdrying, here’s how.

What will I need?

Firstly you need a hairdryer, ideally one with a flat nozzle attachment. This focuses the hot air, allowing you more control and a neater style for your curl. If you don't have a hairdryer, there are many options available on the market but our recommendation for a one-off 'life' investment would be the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer. We discuss in-depth here!

As well as your standard hairbrush, you should also have a round barrel brush. Remember, the bigger the barrel, the bigger the curl. (Bonus points if you have more than one barrel brush as this will allow you to leave one in your hair to cool while you style another section.)

If you are styling with a dryer, straighteners or curlers you could also add in a heat defence for added protection. You could try Kerastase’s L’Incroyable Blowdry or similar high street solutions, which will not only keep your hair safe but could help you eliminate any dreaded frizz.

If you are looking to give your new hair a bit of longevity, you could also apply hairspray or a fixing spray to prolong your finished style.

How do I prepare?

To prepare for your new curls, wash your hair with a shampoo and conditioner that complements your hair. Make sure to remove as much of the excess water as you can before your blow-dry. If you don’t want to wash your hair fully, you can also prepare your hair simply by dampening it. Gently detangle your hair with a normal brush or a detangling brush and make sure you apply your heat defence spray evenly through the roots and ends.

How do I create curls?

Firstly, start by sectioning off parts of your hair.

Take your first section and whilst trying not to overload your barrel brush, place the brush into the roots of the hair underneath the section. Slowly draw the brush through your hair, aiming your hairdryer nozzle at the hair on the brush to focus the heat. Once you have reached the end of the hair, wrap the section right around the brush and allow the hair to cool slightly. If you have more than one barrel, you can leave one wrapped in the curl and begin another section for a better effect. Once cool, unwrap the hair from your brush and allow it to fall gently into its natural curl. Repeat this all over until you have a head of amazing curls.

You are now ready to go, but if you want to make sure your style stays in place, consider a hairspray or fixing spray. Many products can add texture to curls too. Once the product has dried and your hair is cool, gently comb through with your fingers, loosening the curls for a more natural look.

Maintenance

Using heat on your hair regularly can cause damage, so aim to have heat-free days and give your hair regular treatments. For a real hair pampering, try a store-bought hair mask or a salon treatment.
