15 Questions you shouldn’t be afraid to ask your hairdresser

07 May 2025

It’s easy to feel a little shy in the salon chair, not quite sure what you can or can’t ask. But at The Chapel, no questions are off limits.

We’re here to help you understand your hair, not just style it. Whether it’s a transformation or simple advice, our stylists are ready to listen, guide and tailor everything to you. Whatever’s on your mind about your hair, bring it to the chair. We’ve gathered 15 questions people are often afraid to ask their hairdresser and answered them for you.

1. Can I come in just for a conversation?

Yes, of course, it’s encouraged. Our approach is all about understanding you and your hair before diving into the decisions. A consultation - or what we call a conversation - lets you explore options with no pressure to commit. Every appointment starts with a relaxed chat, side-by-side on the sofa. That’s your chance to share everything that’s on your mind, from ideas and insecurities to budget and upkeep. We’ll help you find the best plan for you.

2. What are my options if I’m not sure what I want?

This is exactly what the hourly model is perfect for. You don't have to book a specific service, you can use the time however works best, even if it's just for advice, a treatment, or exploring something new. The best thing to do if you're unsure is to book a consultation, we can help.

3. What do you think would suit my hair type and lifestyle?

Everyone's hair is different, and so is every guest's day-to-day routine. Our stylists take the time to understand how much maintenance you want, how your hair behaves and what’ll work best for you, not just look good in a photo. Whether you’ve got fine, thick, curly or coily hair, we’ll explore what suits you and works for your routine. If you're always on the go, a low-maintenance hairstyle might be ideal for you.

4. How much work will go into styling it at home?

If you typically spend 10 minutes on your hair every morning, let your stylist know before jumping into a sleek bob that needs styling to shine. Be honest about your daily routine so your stylist can craft a cut that fits your lifestyle. That may mean embracing curls or working with straight strands, whatever looks great with ease.

5. Is my hair healthy?

It's more than okay to ask. A stylist can assess your hair's condition and suggest ways to improve it, whether that's a new routine, the right products, or some professional treatments. You're not being judged, we're here to help your hair be its absolute best.

6. Is scalp health really as important as people make out?

Absolutely. Scalp health is the industry secret for better, healthier hair. The skin on your scalp is just like the skin on your face, and looking after it properly makes a real difference. Using the right products (not too drying) is a great place to start.

7. How often should you really get your hair cut?

In theory, the six-to-eight-week rule is spot on, but it depends on your goals, hair type and how quickly your hair grows. We’ll work with your schedule and budget. Some of our guests only visit us 3 times a year. Every visit is personalised - and because you only pay for the time you need, many of our guests find it’s more affordable than they expected.

8. Is there anything I should avoid right now for my hair?

Yes, and we’ll tell you honestly. If your hair has been through stress, over-bleaching, or heat damage, we’ll suggest what to avoid and how to repair it. And if you’re preparing for something big - like starting chemo or using cold cap treatment - we’ve got trained team members who can gently guide you through the hair changes ahead.

9. How much maintenance does this colour require?

Speaking to your Stylist and talking about a maintenance schedule will help inform what they do at each visit, which includes cut and colour.

Your colourist can suggest a schedule that works for your lifestyle and recommend options for gorgeous results, but with less upkeep.

10. How much will this cost me?

Ask us. Always. We agree on your plan and price ahead of time, so you’ll know exactly what to expect. If anything changes, you won’t suddenly find yourself with a higher bill. There are always ways to work within your budget - we’re happy to get creative. And we’ll never charge more if your appointment runs over.

11. What kind of aftercare will I need?

From when to return to what to use at home, your stylist can guide you through everything you need to keep your hair looking and feeling great. There's no gatekeeping, just honest, helpful advice. And if you've had a colour service, using the right products will help maintain its shine and longevity.

12. Can I change my look gradually instead of all at once?

Of course. Not everyone wants a big transformation in one visit. Your stylist can plan a gradual change, maybe going shorter in stages, lightening colour bit by bit, or slowly growing out a fringe. It's your hair journey, there's no rush.

13. Can I style this cut in different ways?

Definitely. If you like to mix things up, ask your stylist to show you a few versatile ways to wear your new cut, sleek and styled, air-dried and natural, or pulled up in a quick fix. It's all about making your hair work for you and your day-to-day. Got wavy hair? We'll show you how to enhance your texture or smooth it out when you want a sleeker look.

14. What's the biggest mistake people make when shampooing?

Often it’s not wetting the hair enough or neglecting the scalp. Use a generous amount of water before applying shampoo, and focus on massaging your scalp with your fingertips. And don’t worry if you’ve been using shower gel or something else unconventional, we’re not here to judge. We’ll work with you and help you adapt.

15. What’s one simple change I can make for healthier hair?

The best place to start is personalisation. Everyone's hair is unique, so the products and routines that work wonders for one person might not suit another. We can help you understand your hair’s specific needs and recommend a care routine that fits your lifestyle. It might be the right shampoo, less heat or fewer washes. The season will affect our hair too - in the winter, our hair is affected by the colder, damper air outside and stress from the central heating. In the summer, warmth, air conditioning, humidity, sunshine and chlorine/salt water from swimming in the sea will affect your hair. We can help adjust how you care for your hair.
