Now, it's not just about how we wear our hair, but what we wear in it.  Accessorising your hair has never been more high fashion, with hair accessories hitting the catwalks and high street shelves alike. Get your hair accessories right, and these added extras have the power to instantly transform a simple style into big statement -- is it any wonder we're huge fans? That's why we've put together a rundown of our favourite hair accessories, and hairstyles to match.

Beautiful barrettes

Barrettes, or 'hairslides', are no longer reserved for the school playground. Featuring in many catwalk looks, we are now seeing barrettes that have been designed for thoroughly grown-up hair. Go for gold slides: taking inspiration from luxury American label Rodarte's shooting star clips, or shining seashells displayed in delicate clusters by Valentino. Such beautifully adorned alligator clips are great for medium length hair. Just slide them into a straightforward side parting, or tuck in at the temple of a faux bob for a glimmer of glamour.

For a classy look go for circular barrettes, such as those seen at Celine. Stunning when worn in hair that's shoulder length or longer: wear a circular gold barrette in a loosely gathered, half up, half down style--the ultimate look of easy elegance.

Roses reek romance, and add a serious splash of colour to any look. Don't panic if you don't have jet-black locks such as those seen at D&G, faux red roses (silk or otherwise) work just as well with fair and red tones. Delivering a real 'peasant princess' vibe, these floral fancies show you don't need to break the bank to accessorise in style.

Ideal for long or medium length hair, just part down the centre and spritz with hairspray all over, before smoothing back into a low ponytail. Wrap your hair loosely around itself to create a chignon at the nape of your neck, secure with grips and add one or several roses at the gathering point.

Last year's catwalks were awash with boho headbands: from Versace's monochrome floral garlands, to bright, heavily adorned festival season wreaths. Whether it's a bold string of sunflowers, a wreath of forget-me-nots, a faux daisy chain, or a crown of berry-red buds, recently worn by Keira Knightley, they can work to add floral femininity to any look.

These headbands are made to drape over loose, lazy braids for a hazy nymph look, but they work equally well with shorter hair (so long as it's not too severe a crop). Simply place over the head at tiara height for the fairy queen look, or wear across the forehead at temple height for that authentic 'peace and love' vibe.

So there you have it, three hair accessories you can try to spice up your style. All of these accessories deliver grown-up glamour with an element of girlish charm. Throw the 'less is more' rule out of the book: when it comes to hair accessories it's all about being bold. Still not sure whether a classy barrette, or boho band will suit you best?
