What are the best hairstyles for oval faces?

22 Jul 2018

Sometimes, one of the hardest things to tackle when it comes to hair is a style to suit your face shape. Many of us are terrified to try something new, but if it compliments your features and means you find a refreshed look, what’s not to love?

You might be seeking something different for the new season, or, you’re simply bored of styling in the same way, day in, day out. To find something that truly represents the real you, we always recommend a relaxed consultation with a hairstylist where they get to understand who you are and your lifestyle.

Whatever your reason, we’ve uncovered five of the most flattering hairstyles for oval face shapes.

1. Bangs

Due to the longer shape of an oval face, a full fringe is unlikely to make it look overly-rounded. Bangs are easy to style and can be grown out quickly if you decide you’re no longer a fan.

Plus, they tend to work with a variety of hair textures and lengths. Think of either long, loose waves, or a shorter, sleeker bob, and you’ll notice bangs are likely to suit both.

If you’d like to try bangs, next time you’re at the hairdressers ask them to cut in a soft, longer fringe to start, which can be cut into and styled as you gain confidence.

2. Textured bob

Bob’s aren’t usually for everyone, but they have a tendency to suit those with oval faces. We like to think they work with all hair colours, too.

Wavy, textured bobs are really on trend right now, so if you fancy a change and think this could be the style for you, why not try it out? When you’re at the hair salon, ask your stylist to chop longer layers, focussing on the front, to make hair look fuller and set your face off nicely.

3. Pixie Cut

Oval faces are so versatile, we think they can pull off a multitude of shorter hairstyles. This includes the infamous pixie cut. With short hairstyles such as these, the focus remains on the face, so it could be a good option if you’re looking to break out of a hairstyling rut, and you’ve had the same cut for years.

When it comes to pixie cuts, if you have fine, thinner hair, it can be best to keep layers longer, to help hair look thicker and fuller.

4. Shoulder length – Curls

Think volume, and lots of it.

Shoulder length styles suit pretty much all face shapes, but especially oval. If you have a sharp, thinner jawline, adding plenty of curls to shoulder length hair can help to fill the face and helps it to look softer, too.

The trick? A large barrel styling wand.

5. Long straight, straight hair

Hot off the catwalks, sleek is back with a vengeance, and it’s a lot more grown-up than back in the 90s.

Modern, straight hair can really suit oval faces; think Naomi Campbell, who wears her poker-straight locks with a centre parting, setting her face off perfectly. If you have longer hair, this style can really work. Ask for a straight blow dry, followed by running the straighteners over once or twice to make it silky smooth.
