Summer Care for Healthier Hair

With summer arriving and holidays spending time in the sun, sea or singing your heart out at a festival, your hair is the last thing you want to think about. It’s the best time of the year to be outside. Although we all remember to apply SPF on our skin, not many of us consider how much the sun affects our hair too.

In case you haven’t, here are our pro tips straight from the salon to protect your hair from damage caused by the summer season.

Stay in the Shade

Overexposure to UV rays damages the outside layer of the hair (called the cuticle), which may cause split ends, brittle hair and your colour to fade. So, if you invested in getting your hair coloured and cut for summer, keeping it sheltered is the best way to keep it shining brighter than sunshine. A hat or a scarf works great, and it’s a great way to get creative with your outfit. The Chapel’s colour specialist, Rebecca Adams, loves using richly coloured headscarves around the pool to really make that healthy hair look fabulous.

Weatherproof Your Hair

English summer is famed for many things, but one of our least favourites is how changeable the weather can be - and what it can do to our hair. To weatherproof your hair for all seasons (because that’s how it feels sometimes!), The Chapel’s go-to is always Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine by Redken. It's lightweight and smells amazing and gives your hair the most amazing healthy shine.

Controlling the Frizz Factor

Invisible yet ruthless, humidity doesn’t care whether you have a wedding this weekend or an Instagram post scheduled. Frizz happens when your hair cuticle is dry because it attracts moisture like a magnet. So it’s important to remember these three H’s: hydration makes happy hair.
For day-long hydration, be sure to follow every shower with a leave-in conditioner like our salon staple Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame Control Cream by Redken. A great budget option for thicker curly hair is coconut oil. Did you know it has a natural SPF of 10? We didn’t until Sarah Nash from our Tunbridge Wells salon let us in on the scoop!
Massage a 5p-sized amount of oil between your palms and before it dries, work it through the mid-lengths and ends of the hair. You can also top up throughout the day on dry hair to calm any pesky strays or flyaways.

Protect your Hair from Sun, Sea and Chlorine

Although it might be beautiful and relaxing, unfortunately, the sea is not so kind to your hair. Salt combined with heat is the perfect recipe for dehydrated hair. Chlorine in swimming pools isn’t that much better for your locks either.
To prep and protect your pre-pool or pre-sea hair, our stylist in Tunbridge Wells, Sarah Nash, says thoroughly soak your hair with fresh water beforehand. Your hair acts as a sponge, so saturate it with clean water. The chlorine and salt won’t be so harsh.

Turn down the heat

As we’ve mentioned, there are lots of reasons your hair can struggle in the summer. Even before you start styling! That’s why, if you can, we suggest steering clear of your tongs and tools.
Heat styling strips the hair of its natural oils and proteins and makes the hair more prone to breakage. Now that we know what the sun, sweat and the sea can do, it’s best to keep things heat-free on your hair if you can.
Using a sea salt spray like the Sea Salt Texturizing Beach Style Hair Spray from Redken is a heat-free solution for natural beach waves or defining your curls.
If you can’t live without your tools, we know how you feel. Here are some easy steps to ensure your hair stays soft and flowy when things heat up. First, protect your lengths and ends with a priming spray. We love Redken’s Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express for this, as it helps to hold your style - even when you’re sleeping!

Stay hydrated

It’s always good to have a bottle of water handy, and it does wonders for your hair. Water nourishes your hair and scalp, protecting the hair and encouraging growth.
If your hair still feels a lot drier than usual, the Kerastase Soleil CC Creme is our very own Colour Specialist Symon May’s favourite. He recommends this product to all his clients come summer because it protects, repairs and adds a killer shine.

At The Chapel, we think it’s important to keep your hair in tip-top condition all year round. Your hair expresses the real you and helps you truly feel amazing. A few simple changes can uplift your hair and really reflect your personal style.
